MARILEE L. MILLER, FORMER ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL AND FEDERAL PROSECUTOR, JOINS RWL

RWL is pleased to announce that Marilee L. Miller, former Assistant Attorney General and federal prosecutor, has joined the Firm as a partner.  Ms. Miller is joining the Firm’s Complex Commercial and Civil Litigation, White-Collar Criminal Investigations and Defense, False Claims Act Litigation, and Sports Franchise and Media Rights Law practices.

Most recently, Ms. Miller specialized in the prosecution of health care fraud as a member of Maryland’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit in the Office of the Attorney General.  During her tenure, the Attorney General recognized her for excellence in the prosecution of fraud, opioid abuse, and other crimes.  She also received an award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General for the prosecution of one such fraud case, involving fraudulent billing practices and the unlawful dispensing of prescription drugs from two Maryland-based clinics.  A U.S. House of Representatives’ subcommittee selected the case for inclusion in a report related to the nation’s opioid crisis.

A Western native, Ms. Miller worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in California before moving to Maryland.  In that role, she conducted civil investigations pursuant to the federal False Claims Act and the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act.  Ms. Miller handled federal asset forfeiture and criminal matters while in the office, as well.

Prior to this government service, Ms. Miller was a senior counsel and associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Foley & Lardner LLP, a global law firm.  Ms. Miller has represented clients in federal and state courts from the West Coast to the East Coast.  She has handled appeals before three federal courts of appeal, the Illinois Court of Appeals, and the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.  She also has trial experience in federal and state courts.

Ms. Miller completed clerkships with the Honorable Tena Campbell, Chief Judge, of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah; the Honorable Ronald E. Nehring, Associate Justice, of the Utah Supreme Court; and Senator Harry Reid of Nevada.

Prior to her legal career, Ms. Miller was a reporter in Washington, D.C. for such outlets as Bloomberg News and Congressional Quarterly.  She received a William Randolph Hearst award, the so-called Pulitzer Prize of college journalism, and other recognition for her investigation and writing abilities.

She is a member of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association and licensed to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia.  She is a member of Northwestern University’s Leadership Council.  She previously served as a member of the regional counsel for the United Way of the Capital Region and an associate trustee of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, with both organizations based in Washington, D.C.
